I have added a link to the fall premieres on the sidebar over to the left there. It's important to me to know when my shows are on. I've also watched the first episode of True Blood, which airs Sundays at 9eastern, and is pretty sweet. It's on the movie network here, so you'll have to subscribe. You also get Californication and Dexter, so that alone makes it worth the extra $$.

I should have bolded Fringe in my list of premieres. I'm sorry. I'm more sorry if you missed it. It's on again Sunday at 8 eastern, on Fox, and you should definitely watch it. It seems to have all the good parts of a JJ Abrahms show, but without the "well since I missed the first episode, clearly I can never watch it" aspect.

Health Canada's recall site. Updated pretty well. I even found a toy that I have which is unsafe due to higher than acceptable levels of barium. Barium? Sure. I haven't opened it yet, thankfully, and have emailed the lovely folks at Alex toys to see what I should do with it. Hopefully they send me a pile of money for my troubles.

I mean, wait. What? I'm not that into politics really, even though it's hard to avoid with the 2-year long bombardment of ads and trash campaigns, but this latest move has me a bit baffled. So, let's choose someone who nobody has heard of to be the potential VP. We'll have people saying everything from "oh, she's great, so brave with her son who has Down syndrome!" (but of course, the wee boy is only 4 months, so I'm not sure there have been myriad issues she's had to brave her way through just yet...) and she's let us all know now that her 17-year old daughter is pregnant, for no reason other than to make people stop speculating that her baby son is actually her daughter's child. No, see, she's having her own! He's mine! Brilliant. I'll have to ask my cousin Kelly what she thinks, she lives in Alaska, maybe she can offer some insight. Not that it matters what we think, I suppose!

bassinet recall!

I know you're not all parents, but I am, and this is my website. Simplicity has (begrudgingly, it seems) posted a recall on their bassinets. Not all of them, but they have issued at least 2 recalls because after the first one, another baby died in another model bassinet. I can't find one good site that explains it all, but the Elfe site has a notice (you sort of have to look, though) and if you google it you'll find lots of things.

My vote goes to if you have a Simplicity brand bassinet you return it and get your money back, and if you have a bassinet of a similar design you maybe stop using it. I checked mine, it's First Years, and I can't see how it would be a danger, but my little sweet pea sleeps in her crib now anyway. With airflow bumpers and no big blankets, toys, or pillows. I lay her down on her back but she rolls over, so I can't help that she sleeps on her tummy. My heart goes out to the poor families who lost children when they were trying to sleep their babies in (what should have been) the safest place possible.

Fall 2008 Premieres!

For my seester. And I have to say, it was tricky to track down a list with all the networks and the times! Let's assume they're Eastern, since that seems to always be the case. So, add an hour or whatever, figure it out for yourselves. The CW has lots of shows, we'll get some of them I'm sure, but I don't know when. Sorry.

nothing really

I'm not bragging, it's more of disbelief really, but the baby slept for 12.5 hours the other night. Madness! I still haven't been out without her for more than a few minutes, except for once when I took the boy down the street to play with a neighbour and my mom watched the baby. She's so unpredictable with eating, I can't really plan for it by leaving bottles. I may have to break down and try formula with her, or I may not get to leave the house alone for another 6 months or so. Which isn't cool, really.

We're all holding up pretty well here. I went with my mom, grannie, and the babe to Maine, and it was good. I spent most of my exemption on other people, but that was mostly cause I didn't really want to buy a bunch of clothes. I can wear all my regular clothes now, but some of them give me muffin top, which we all know is just not attractive. Bigger stuff doesn't fit right, and I don't really want to buy things to fit for what I hope will be a short time, so I just won't buy anything right now. I got new sunglasses for me and the man, and some clothes for the little ones. Whee!

This weekend is the long one, and we're heading to my parents' cottage. It's becoming a bit of a tradition, since it's nice there and the long weekend gives the man the extra day off to make it a more worthwhile trip. We went for our "honeymoon" and then again for our anniversary, and had been there before that. I go other times, and the man tries to, but the August long weekend we always make it. My sister and her husband will also be in attendance, and I'm betting there will be bbq-ing and ice cream making. I might bring my ice cream maker so that we can make more than one kind, because we can never agree which to make.

I've made lots, the latest is strawberry. MMMmmm. It has like 6C of strawberries in it, which was less once blendered with cream, but still has a very high berries-to-cream ratio, which is nice. I only put about half a cup of sugar in, and it's damn tasty. Orange sherbet is next on the list, and then I'd like to try coffee.

Exciting, I know! I'm going to go check on the boy, I think he may have fallen asleep. I wish! This only means though that the baby will wake up momentarily. The boy is upset because I won't let him play outside in the thunder. Sorry dude.

how to make your kids hate you, in 3 easy steps.

I'm still learning with this parenting thing, but mostly with the boy. The girl has overall been delightful, teaching me mostly that babies are all very different, and that it really is possible for a 6 week old to sleep through the night. CRAZY, I know.
The boy has taught me things like:
* always have extra clothes. not just for him, for you too. you just never know when you might need to go to the wading pool, and you are all gonna get wet.
* always have bandaids on hand.
* and snacks.
* never go through with your trip to superstore if your 3 year old falls asleep on the way there and you can't wake him up to get him into the cart. the cuteness of your 2 kids sleeping in the cart, your eldest leaning on the baby's carseat, oh how cute! will be far outweighed by the embarrassment of your eldest waking up in the checkout line, very sleepy and confused, and crying / screaming like you've told him you murdered cookie monster. not worth it.
* you shouldn't ever take your kids to McDonald's. If you do, don't tell them that a toy comes with the meal. Get the cookies, or hide the toy for later. Otherwise, every time you ask your child what s/he wants for lunch / supper / snack, s/he will likely answer "a toy from McDonald's".
* the sizing of children's clothing is no more standard than that of adult clothing. The boy has clothes that are 12-18 months (he, coincidentally, also had some of those that fit at birth...) and some that are size 6, all of which fit. He's 3.

I think that's it for now. He's napping, as is the wee lass, she's just nodded off in the sling that my super talented sister made for me. go check her out! The site is just starting out, so be patient. But if you want a baby holder, give her a shout. Anyway, I'm going to put the wee one in bed and try to catch a wink or two myself. Heading to Maine this weekend with my mom and grannie. Sadly, the aforementioned sister is unable to attend the festivities because she is a normal person and works, and can't take time off right now. We're going to bring her sweet presents though, hopefully.

mostly. I mean, we're moved, obviously, but we're not like, unpacked or anything. Our room and the boy's room are fully put away, but the wee lass's room lacks some storage, so her clothes are mostly on the floor. Sad, I know. We're getting a new dresser for the boy, so she'll inherit the dresser that he has currently, which matches the crib anyway. The painting went well for their rooms, the boy's is a really nice blue, a bit darker than the other rooms, but it's good for him because it makes it darker at night for sleeping. Also, as I've said, should be calming and whatnot. The girl's room is a really nice bright springy green. I was a bit worried when it was going on, but it's settled into a lovely colour. It does glow a bit on the door and trim, but still nice. I need to find some nice fabric to make curtains out of. I'd like something pretty but not too frou-frou or grown up. Fabricville only has so much, so it's proving hard to find something nice that will coordinate with the room. She has started sleeping in the crib in her room, which was a bit of a change since she was in the bassinet in our room for the first 2 months of her life. It's not quite as easy at night, but she's only up once anyway (not bragging, still a bit in disbelief, honestly) so it's definitely manageable.

We have a basement now, so a lot of the packed boxes have gone there to live for a while. Most of the basement is finished, so the boxes are hanging out in the unfinished part with the cat stuff, tools, washer and dryer, and wooh, deep freeze! Sweet. We got our new furniture yesterday, and while I LOVE it, the man is like, "I thought we were getting a couch and a chair..." (which we did, but it's a chair and a half, which is a big chair, which I DID fully explain, but he's a man, and does not listen / pay attention / remember things that I say) so I don't know that he's thrilled, but oh well! We had planned to put the tv upstairs and have another smaller one downstairs for the boy and for movies and stuff, but I think for now we may just leave it downstairs. It's hot, man. And not in the basement, so we don't mind hanging out down there in the evenings.

I want to get some hanging baskets, to which the man has said I can hold off, because he doesn't want the porch overrun with flowers. I don't think 2 hanging baskets qualifies as overrun, but we'll see. I think it's like a rule that if you have a porch, you need hanging baskets. Right? For now I just got a planter for the steps and some pretty annuals, none of which I know the name of. That's a lie, there are snapdragons. I've always thought those were pretty fun.

I'm heading to Maine in a couple of weeks, ostensibly to visit my uncle who runs a restaurant down there in Boothbay Harbor, but really we'll be doing more shopping than visiting. Not cause we don't like him, just cause running a restaurant takes a lot of work, and he's not home much. Also for that reason, the boy will not be joining us, but spending the time with his other grandparents. They had planned to take him anyway, for their vacation, so it works out well. The girl will be joining us, since she's pretty dependent on me for food and such. She likes to sleep and cuddle, so I don't see it being a problem trucking her around to Freeport and stuff.

It's been wicked hot here the past few days. We've gone to the wading pool a few times, but have also been hiding out in the aforementioned basement to keep cool. Air conditioning is for suckers! We have ceiling fans in all the bedrooms, which helps a bit, but it works a lot better if we keep the windows open at night. This is kind of a problem too, because we don't live in the boonies anymore, so we have neighbours, and traffic and stuff, which make noise. It's an adjustment, for sure.

2 posts in one day? whaaaaa?

I know. I just had to update. We've packed up the movies and what I refer to as "the island of lost toys / appliances" which is all the little gadgety things that we use, but not all the time. Indoor grill, slow cooker, citrus juicer (I just bought that. I've made 2 lemon meringue pies, and it's a pain in the ass to juice those things by hand with my $1.97 plastic juicer. Also, as I mentioned, I plan to make lemon sherbet. That takes 8 lemons.), liquor cabinet, ice cream maker. You get the idea. I also packed up my cookbooks, which is a very full banker box which there is no hope of getting a top on, but I think they're wedged in tightly enough that they won't go anywhere in transit.

Tomorrow we meet with the lawyer to sign some stuff, and then the kids and I are driving to Moncton to pick out some furniture. The man's uncle is manager of a furniture store there, so we'll get a pretty good family discount. I'm excited; the only furniture we've had has been 2nd hand at best, and we haven't really gotten to pick it out. I'm dropping the boy off with my mother in law, and then meeting my mom and doing some furniture shopping. Then she's coming back here to help finish packing and then to paint the bedrooms on Friday and move and stuff. The boy's room will be blue (Behr's "little pond"), not because he's a boy, but because he likes blue. The girl will have a green (Behr's "cabbage green") room, because that's just a nice colour. It also works out that blue is a calming colour, and the green is a brighter colour, which should work well with their personalities. As much as I can tell what kind of personality my 2-month-old has.

Anyway, on to the 2 month old. Poor dear had her checkup and first needles today. I tell ya, there is little so terrible as holding your poor infant still while the nurse jabs 1, 2, 3 needles into her little chubby legs. The man refuses to go to these appointments, and with his distaste (cough, fear, cough) for needles, I doubt it would do anybody any good for him to go. But still. I went through this with the boy. 2, 4, 6, 12, and 18 months. Each with at least 2 needles. Good times. In better news though, she's growing lots. She's up to 12lbs 5oz, which seems pretty impressive, that's 4lbs in 2 months. However, the boy was at 13lbs13oz at 2 months, so I guess he's winning the race so far. The man is pretty sure it's because his head was so big, but I hope that wouldn't account for 1.5lbs...

Off to relax. It's hot here and I packed a box and had a girlie dr appt and a needle baby dr appt, and that is enough for one day. Oh, I did have lunch at Quiznos, one of those sammies...chicken bacon ranch. It was $2, and SUPER delish. Just right for a smallish lunch or solid snack.

Know what's worse than a newly potty trained 3 year old? A newly potty trained 3 year old with diarrhea!

That's all the detail you need about that. Suffice to say we'll be regressing to wearing diapers for at least today.

Other than that, things are going pretty well. We're going to tackle the kitchen tonight and some of the tv room. That room actually won't be too bad, it's mostly just the big furniture, but there are books and things to come off shelves because you just can't easily move a shelf full of books. I've packed up the upstairs as much as I can, all that's left to do is the boy's clothes, which will just be going in a large garbage bag or 2. The kitchen is going to be a pain in the ass, but I think that's just the way kitchens are. We may not have internet right away, they're sending us the self-install kit, so it might not arrive Friday. I hope it does though!

We're planning to paint the kids' rooms on Friday and move most of the boxes over. The man's plan / hope is to get the kitchen and shed moved, along with the giant hide-a-bed couch upstairs, on Friday. That will leave mostly just furniture for Saturday, when we've rented a truck. I've got all the utilities switched over, I cancelled my Primus account because we're going with Aliant, and I remembered that you need to cancel a month in advance. I did not know that you have to do the same thing with Bell, so those asshats are going to be charging me until July 20 for tv I won't be watching. We did (briefly) consider keeping them, they'll come do a new dish for free and stuff at your new house, but they're just SO GOSH DARN UNHELPFUL at all times, that I couldn't imagine staying with them. Rogers is no better, but at least my signal won't go out if it's humid, or windy, or just for fun.

In other news, I've been making ice cream. The favourite by most so far is mint chocolate chip. Not mint chip fudge; let's be clear. I've also made maple walnut, which is good if you like walnuts, which I don't. My favourite so far was chocolate with peanut butter and marshmallow fluff, even though the fluff gets really hard in the freezer. We made some apple crisp, and I made a French vanilla to go with it, which is quite tasty. The difference, for those of you who care, is that French vanilla is a cooked custard base with eggs, where vanilla is just cream, sugar, and vanilla. My next one will be lemon sherbet. mmmm.

That's about it. Things with the wee ones are going pretty well other than the aforementioned stomach issues. The wee-est one was 2 months yesterday, and so has a checkup with NEEDLES today. Gross. The man has never experienced the giving needles to children part of parenting. He's a giant weiner when it comes to needles himself, so I really don't see that he'd be much help. Anyway, I'll dose her up with Advil before we go and nurse her right after, and hope for the best. She still sleeps a lot, but is (sort of, maybe?) getting into a bit of a routine. Evenings are the most unpredictable, she can eat constantly for like 3 hours, or eat a few times an then be down for the count at 8. This impedes my ability to like, leave the house unattended, but I'm ok with that for now. For now. lol. We have a wedding to go to in August, hopefully she'll be a bit more settled by then.

I have to go shower because I also have a checkup today, and I think it's kind of rude not to shower before you have to get all up close and personal with somebody, you know? The boy is watching Super Why, which I pretend is educational, so I don't mind him just sitting there while I play on the computer or shower. I *almost* got to have a nap yesterday, it was great. Almost.

we move in 16 days

and I have packed one entire closet. I'm not worried, but the way people are reacting when I tell them that, I feel like I should be. We have 2 weeks! My parents are going to come up for a couple of days before we move and help us finish up, so I think it should be ok. We'll see I guess! We've moved so many times, I just take for granted that it'll get done. We do have more stuff, but we'll have more help too, and we have 3 full days to get from here to there, and a truck rented, so there.

Friday the 27th we close on the new place, and we'll bring some things over, but mostly clean and paint the kids' rooms. They are pink and purple. Yipes. So, the little girl's room will be a nice green, and the boy's will be blue. Not because he's a boy, but because he likes blue. As far as I can tell...he is 3, after all. But whenever he gets to pick something, he picks blue. Like which is your favourite Ninja Turtle? Blue. Which disgusting rainbow coloured twizzler would you like to try first? Blue. Ok. I told him I'd let him pick the colour for his room, and he said, "I want red." I said, let me rephrase that. I'll present you with 2 blue paint chips, and you can pick which shade you'd like. He laughed and said "Red!"

Good times. It's not all fun and games though, life with a 3 year old. And a 7 week old. The 7 week old is remarkably wonderful, as is the 3 year old, really, the best he can be for a 3 year old. Baby girl sleeps a lot still, which was worrisome at first but now is just lovely. Unless gassy, she's a generally happy little person, which makes this whole thing much easier. The boy is also generally happy, but has meltdowns several times a day over anything from me not letting him have candy or a donut for breakfast (YES! Need candy!) to making him wear clothes to go play with the little girl down the road. (NO! Wanna be barenaked boy!)
We disagree, and the conversation progresses something like this:
Yes!
No!
You can't say no to me, I'm the mom.
Yes! I say no!
Fine then, I'm not taking you anywhere.
Yes! I wanna go anywhere!
You don't even make sense when you talk. Put on your underwear!
No! Don won unnerwear!!

and so on.

He also, thanks to my wonderful husband, has seen the movie Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story numerous times, and nearly caused a very embarrassing scene at Tingley's ice cream store when he saw Bruce Lee pushing his bicycle in the door. He's facing the door, I'm facing him. He's like, 'mom, Bruce Lee!" I said, what? "Bruce Lee, here!" I turned around, saw this like, 17 year old Asian kid, and am thinking...shit, what do I say to end this quickly and painlessly? So I say, no, buddy, it's probably not Bruce Lee (because he's dead, and would at least be old, but no need to scare the kid), because he doesn't live around here. It's probably just someone who looks like him. The boy seemed to accept this easily enough, but when the kid walked past us, the boy sort of looks sideways at him and says quietly, "Bruce Lee?" Fortunately, it sounds like "booce wee" and thus probably wouldn't get us fined for being racist or anything anyway, but man. Funny stuff. He also points out all kinds of other people he knows on the street, including pointing me out to me when we were driving the other day. I assume he means it's someone who looks like me, or whoever else, but he hasn't quite figured out how to put that into words yet. Or he just can't be bothered, which is much more likely.

Anyway. I'm freaking tired, and I packed a closet today, which was a lot more than it sounds, because it was one of our storage closets (we don't have a basement here) and there was a lot of shit in there. So, I'm going to bed.

several things.

First, I'm sorry, but I just don't get the big thing about Sex and the City. The show was entertaining enough, sure, but a movie? And a record-breaking movie at that? I don't get it.

I ordered a 10-pack of timbits yesterday, specified assorted, and got 13 chocolate ones. I appreciated the extras, for sure, but they were for the boy, and he doesn't like chocolate. (I know, what? but he's weird.) To me, it makes sense that if a person orders an assortment and you only have one flavour, you let them know before they pay for and drive off with a non-assortment. Luckily the boy was in a good mood, otherwise things could have gone downhill quickly. I ate them all, thanks for asking. They were delicious.

I also got myself an ice capp, because they're delicious. The boy got an oj. He wanted to try my ice capp, I said well, ok, but just a tiny sip. I was pretty sure he wouldn't like it. He loved it. I said ok, enough, give me back my drink bud. He handed me his oj. Nice try! So that plan backfired. I don't know if there's actual cappuccino in the drink, but it can't be good for small children regardless. I told him coffee makes people be short, and that's why I'm taller than his grandparents (my in-laws), because they are big coffee drinkers and I only have the odd hot chocolate or ice capp. Ha! That makes perfect sense to him, and me, really.

I'm super glad that I live in this country, and not that one.

I got peed on twice today

and once not even by my own kid. I tell ya, this parenting thing is hard! We went to a friend's place to play on her ginormous castle playplace thing (seriously, it has a climbing wall, slide, swings, teeter totter, rope, ladder, and platform with a periscope and steering wheel), and she was making lunch for the bunch of us, so I took her little boy, 4 months, to change and get ready for a nap. He repaid this kindness by peeing on me. Frigging kid. It dried, so I was fine, but I later got milk and baby spitup on my shirt, and then my own dear baby's pee on me after her bath, which started well and went mostly with no tears, but then quickly deteriorated at the end and the poor thing needed to be fed before she would tolerate being diapered.

things are going pretty well all in all. We're in a bit of a cranky / gassy / growth spurty period, but the nights are still pretty good. Even though when she wakes up, it's sometimes for an hour or so, it's not more than twice a night, so I count myself lucky. The boy is a bit of a challenge, because he alternates between wanting to hold her constantly and wanting me to hold HIM when I'm feeding her and really can't hold him. When the baby is sleeping, he still likes me, but isn't really all that interested in cuddling. Again, frigging kid. I'm sure things will even out, the novelty of the baby will wear off and the boy will go back to doing his own thing most of the time. My sister is making me a sling, which will make it easier for me to tote the tiny girl around while doing stuff for my boy. I have a wrap for her too, but I have a hard time stuffing her in it without both of us ending up near tears.

It's getting late, and the little girl just went down to bed, where she normally would have about 2 hours ago. Gas, maybe, tough to say with a 3 week old what exactly is going on. My mom's up this week, which is great, cause she's very like me, and doesn't cater to the boy's every crazy whim, so when she does go, it won't be a big adjustment for us to get back to normal. The man is away for 3 days next week. I'm not sure if I'm going to stick around here or jump on the opportunity to debut Willow to my extended family and take a trip down to my parents' house. We'll see!

I'll give the much quicker version here. Arrived at the hospital at 9pm on Tuesday, water broken at 11:50, baby at 12:16am Wednesday. Ridiculously quick at the end there, and thus painful, but we got a pretty cute baby out of the deal.

We're all doing pretty well, considering. The boy is adjusting, but wants to either be held or be holding the baby at all times, which is challenging. The man is home all week to help ease the transition and hopefully we'll be able to get into some kind of routine by the end of it. Posts will obviously be even more sporadic than before.
