A chimp speaks

A bonobo chimpanzee named Kanzi has invented four spoken "words," say his trainers at Georgia State University.
Jared Taglialatela and Sue Savage-Rumbagh noticed that the chimp made distinct noises during their conversations with him -- and that certain noises remained the same, even in different contexts. For Kanzi, certain sounds consistently meant "banana," "juice," "grapes," and "yes."
He was taught to communicate in symbols and understands some spoken English. But "we haven't taught him this," Mr. Taglialatela told New Scientist. "He's doing it on his own."
